Conservation activist Neil Hamilton to speak in Jefferson Oct. 25

Neil Hamilton, a leading voice in conservation, agricultural policy and land stewardship, will speak Sunday, Oct. 25, at 2 pm at the Greene County Historical Museum, 219 E. Lincoln Way in Jefferson.

Hamilton’s talk, “Through Nature’s Lens: Where Are We with our Efforts to Protect Iowa’s Water, Land and Wildlife?”  draws lessons from his three books — The Land Remains (2022), The River Knows (2023), and Through Nature’s Lens (2025). He will put into context the current political discussions concerning the 2026 Farm Bill, the increase in cancer cases in Iowa, the legislature’s  failure to fund IWILL, and the growing public awareness of our water quality problems.

Hamilton will discuss challenges Iowa faces in being honest about our lack of progress in protecting clean water and funding nature programs. He will focus on reasons why Iowans should remain hopeful; and discuss how we can all make our voices heard as Friends of Nature and participate in the third annual Iowa Nature Summit Nov. 18-19 at Drake University in Des Moines.

Copies of Hamilton’s three books will be given to each of our Greene County public and high school libraries; and will also be available for sale to the public after the event. Book signing and refreshments will follow the speaker’s remarks.

This event is hosted by the Friends of Greene County Iowa Parks and the Greene County Historical Society. Funding in large part is provided by a grant from the Greene County Community Foundation. Call or text 515-386-8544 for more information.

“If you are interested in Iowa’s land and water—the land you live on and the water you drink—please plan to attend this event! It is free and open to the public. Please join us,” Friends of Greene County Parks co-chair Cheryl Robson said.
